What should I write in my morning journal?

You can write absolutely anything you want in your morning journal. You can write down any thoughts or feelings that come up, anything that you’re excited or frustrated about, or you can use writing prompts to reflect on specific areas of your mind and life.

The prompts I share below are just morning journaling ideas, you can really do whatever you want!

Is it better to journal in the morning or before bed?

Anytime is a good time to journal. It’s really about what works best for you. A morning journal practice can really set you up for a great day, but if you’d rather journal at night that’s perfectly fine too. There are no rules and no wrong way to journal.

As long as you are taking a few minutes each day to look inwards and reflect you will see an improvement to your life when you use these journal prompts daily.

How long should I journal in the morning?

The best length of time to spend journaling in the morning is whatever works best for you. You can journal for five minutes or half an hour, it just depends on how much time you have and what you need to get out of your head.

You might find that some days you feel peaceful and don’t have a lot of write about. Other days you might have a lot of mental chaos and need more time to focus your thoughts and process your feelings.

If you’re new to journaling you can just choose a few questions to answer and not worry about writing for a certain amount of time.

The Best Way to Use Morning Writing Prompts

When you wake up in the morning, the world is still fresh. There are no emails to answer, no phones ringing, and no one clamoring for your attention. It’s a time to start your day slowly and deliberately.

First, you don’t have to answer every question each day. Just choose 2-3 or as many as feel good to you. You can use any journal you like, but I find having a nice journal and pens makes me a little more exciting to crack it open and start writing.

Create a ritual with your morning journal practice. If you already have a morning routine then find a way to integrate journaling, otherwise start a routine of morning habits that feel good.

For example, in my own morning routine I start by making a cup of coffee, then I sit at my desk and get out my journal. I’ll think about how I want my day to go and answer any writing prompts that I feel called to.

I always start with a morning gratitude practice, just listing out 5-10 things you’re thankful for will set you up with a positive attitude.

After making a gratitude list sometimes my journaling is about negative feelings that I need to process and release, other times I’m reflecting on my goals and finding things that will inspire me to have a productive day.

Then sometimes I’ll meditate for a few minutes, or I’ll jump right into my to-do list.

You might decide to workout or make breakfast after journaling, just do whatever activities work with your schedule.

Most importantly, be consistent. I experienced the greatest results when I made a commitment to journal daily. Try challenging yourself to journal every day for a month. I enjoy marking off each day on my habit tracker.
