25 Favors to Do for Your Future Self (That Take Less Than 10 Minutes)
We tend to think of doing favors for others, but what about doing a favor for the most important person in your life—your future self? This isn’t about optimizing every hour of your day or checking boxes on a productivity list. It’s about something gentler and more meaningful than that.
It’s about looking ahead with compassion and asking, what can I do today to make life a little easier for the person I’m becoming?
Every small action you take now is a weight you’re lifting off tomorrow’s shoulders. A cleared drawer, a sent email, an early bedtime—none of these are monumental, but together they create a life that feels lighter, more intentional, and more like yours. Here are some of the best favors you can do for your future self.

Simple Favors You Can Do for Your Future Self Starting Today
- Create an outline for an idea you have and plan the first few small steps. You don’t have to know the whole path, just the first step.
- Put away your laundry, then future you doesn’t have to do it! This is my hack for making myself put away clothes, it’s one of my least favorite chores.
- Open a high-yield savings account (I’ve used Ally for many years) and/or a retirement account like a Roth IRA (if you’re in the US).
- Send one email you’ve been avoiding.
- Book an appointment your future self will thank you for.
- Put 10 items you know you’re never going to use again in a box and donate it this week. Here are 28 Easy Things to Declutter.
- Tidy one drawer, folder, closet, or corner of your space.
- Write down your top 3 priorities for the next 30 days and let anything else be a bonus.
- Go to bed 30 minutes earlier tonight. I recently bought the Nod Pod sleep mask and it’s been amazing for helping me fall asleep quicker, along with taking Magnesium Glycenate daily.
- Find reasons to be happy right now instead of waiting for some magical thing to arrive. Write out a list of 10 things that make your light easier, that make you happy, that you are deeply grateful to have in your life.
- Focus on small daily steps instead of impossible and overwhelming leaps. You get farther with 1% progress every day than staying stuck because you’re overwhelmed.
- Be your own cheerleader and celebrate your success—big and small! Make a list of 20 wins, that’s proof that you’re accomplishing things.
- Adopt the mindset of “life gets to be easy for me.” Sometimes we make life harder than it needs to be because we are trained to think everything has to be complicated—and that becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. That doesn’t mean there aren’t hard things in life, but we can make some things easier.
- Surround yourself with as much beauty as you can, even if there is ugliness out in the world. Find the whimsy, find ways to play. 90 Ways to Make Life Whimsical
- Allow yourself to show up imperfectly. It’s ok to just do your best today, whatever that looks like.
- Don’t take everything (including your desires) so seriously. When you catch yourself stressing about something that isn’t really a big deal, tell yourself “the world isn’t ending, it’s not that serious, I’m safe to relax right now.”
- Drink a full glass of water right now. Hydration is one of the easiest gifts you can give your body, and future you will feel the difference.
- Unsubscribe from 10 emails cluttering your inbox. A cleaner inbox means less mental noise every single day going forward.
- Write down three things you never want to forget—a memory, a lesson learned, or something that made you laugh. Your future self will treasure it.
- Set one boundary you’ve been putting off. A conversation, a “no,” or a limit you establish today protects your peace for months to come.
- Move your body for just 10 minutes. A short walk, a stretch, or a dance break — consistency beats intensity every time. When you’re old do you want to be stuck at home because you can barely walk, or out enjoying your life? My mom is 75 and still goes hiking, staying active pays off.
- Put a recurring bill or subscription you don’t use on your calendar to cancel. Future you keeps that money.
- Write yourself a letter to open in one year. Capture where you are, what you hope for, and what you want to remember. Put a reminder in your calendar to read it. Future you will be moved.
- Forgive yourself for one thing you’re still carrying. Letting go of guilt or regret is one of the most practical acts of self-care there is. You can tell yourself something like, “I made a mistake, but I was doing my best with what I had and that’s ok. I’m still valuable and worthy of happiness.”
- Back up your phone or computer today. It takes 10 minutes and future you—the one whose hard drive crashes—will be absolutely relieved.
Your future self is going to show up no matter what—tired or rested, overwhelmed or at ease, carrying yesterday’s baggage or walking a little freer. The choices you make today are quietly shaping which version of that person arrives.
None of this has to be dramatic or perfect. It doesn’t require a complete life overhaul or an iron will. It just requires a little bit of kindness, directed inward and forward. Start with one thing on this list—just one—and let that be enough. Future you is already grateful.
